William J. Palm, III

Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Ph.D. Northwestern University, 1971
B.S. Loyola College, 1966
Dr. Palm's professional interests center on:
  • Control Systems
  • Robotics
  • Dynamic Systems
  • Dynamics and Vibrations
He is the author of several engineering texts including "Mechanical Vibration" (John Wiley & Sons, 2006), "System Dynamics" (McGraw-Hill, 2005), "Introduction to MATLAB 7 for Engineers" (McGraw-Hill, 2005), which was translated into Chinese, Korean, and Italian, and "Modeling, Analysis, and Control of Dynamic Systems", 2nd Edition, (John Wiley & Sons, 1999) .   He is also a Special Contributor to the fifth editions of "Statics" and "Dynamics" by Meriam and Kraige (John Wiley & Sons, 2002).  The chapter "Basic Control Systems Design" in The Mechanical Engineer's Handbook, 3rd Edition, M. Kutz, Ed. (John Wiley & Sons, 2006) was also authored by Professor Palm.

He was the Director of the University of Rhode Island Robotics Research Center from 1986 to 1993, and has conducted sponsored research in robotics.   Some of Dr. Palm's  papers have been presented at such gatherings as the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the SPIE Conference on Intelligent Robots and Computer Vision, the CIRP International Seminar on Manufacturing Systems, and the ASME Winter Annual Meeting.
